On May 1st The Walt Disney Company filed an application to trademark “Day of the Dead” for an upcoming film being created in conjunction with Pixar. Let’s just say that through social media channels they received a message loud and clear.
This cartoon via Lalo Alcaraz shows the contempt that some members of the Latin community felt at the thought of their cultural holiday becoming a mere Disney Trademark.
After numerous tweets and online petitions Disney withdrew their trademark application citing “Disney’s trademark filing was intended to protect any potential title for our film and related activities,” a company statement said. “It has since been determined that the title of the film will change and therefore we are withdrawing our trademark filing.”
