Downtown Disney 2014 St. Patrick’s Day Schedule of Events

2014 downtown disney st patricks day

Music and merriment abound when the most authentic St. Patrick’s Day celebration in Central Florida comes to Downtown Disney March 7-17.

The celebration at Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant and throughout Downtown Disney pays homage to Celtic culture with nearly 10 top Irish bands and pro dancers performing on three stages during select days of the festival. With performances starting nightly March 7-14 from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. and daily 12 p.m. to 1 a.m. March 15-17 on stages indoors and out, guests can don their finest green duds and join in a jig or two.

Highlights of the celebration across Downtown Disney will include:

  • Performances by The Willis Clan, world-famous U2 tribute band Elevation, Goitse, Three Dollar Band, We Banjo 3, The Ragland Rebels, The Brazen Heads and Raglan Road house bands Creel and The West Coast Trio
  • The Raglan Road Dancers — seven full-time champion dancers, performing daily
  • Renowned Irish dancer and choreographer Ronan McCormack of the original Riverdance cast, leading Irish Dance Workshops “From Roots to Riverdance”
  • Ceili (kay-lee) traditional music and structured set-dancing event, during which host Ronan McCormack invites guest participation

Additional entertainment inspired by the Emerald Isle will include more than 50 musicians and dancers, face painting, stilt walkers, living statues and giveaways. Guests will find it’s easy being green at The Mighty Family Zone on the West Side, a new offering during the Mighty St. Patrick’s Festival. Guests can snag a photo with Kermit, learn how to draw everyone’s favorite frog, take part in games and DJ dance parties, and more.

Also new this year: the four Disney Food Trucks (Fantasy Fair, Namaste Café, Superstar Catering and World Showcase of Flavors) will serve delicious eats each evening of the festival at Downtown Disney West Side, including a special St. Patrick’s Day-themed cupcake. Guests can also purchase Fisherman’s Pie, a favorite dish from the Ireland kiosk at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, at the World Showcase of Flavors Food Truck.

Guests can order from the popular Raglan Road lunch, dinner and bar menus throughout the event. Irish celebrity chef Kevin Dundon of Raglan Road will bring traditional Irish flavors to Downtown Disney with dishes such as loin of bacon and cabbage, and guests will find a hearty selection of beers on tap.

The restaurant’s Cooke’s of Dublin counter-service eatery will offer Irish favorites like fish and chips, battered sausages and deep-fried candy bars, and guests will discover additional food and specialty drinks created just for the festival at select Downtown Disney restaurants.

On Monday, St. Patrick’s Day, guests will be seated at Raglan Road on a first-come, first-served basis with a cover charge of $10 for each guest age 18 and older. Reservations can be booked for other festival days by calling 407-938-0300.

2014 runDisney Inaugural Glass Slipper Challenge Part 1 – The Disney Enchanted 10K Race Recap

Did you know you can run a Disney 10K on an hour and a half of sleep? True story. I did it.

JetBlue held my race bestie (Running at Disney) hostage and didn’t release her from her snowy foggy prison of a terminal til late Friday night so we were functioning on very little sleep and lots of pixie dust Saturday morning for the Inaugural Enchanted 10K.

Sleep…we don’t need no stinkin’ sleep. Still all smiles at 5am.

Look who I finally spotted! The balloon ladies. Poor gals…so much loathing of these women and they really are just truing to help. No one wants to see the 16 minute mile balloon lady pacers. If you do…you better run!

Time to start this 6.2 mile journey.

It was foggy and super humid for the 10K portion of the Inaugural Glass Slipper Challenge.  Reminded me of the weather we had for the 2013 Princess Half Marathon Weekend.

After heading out of the Epcot Parking Lot and before reaching Epcot Center Drive, runners were treated to an appearance by Princess Elsa from Frozen shouting sweet nothings from an overpass.

We then hooked a right onto Epcot Center Drive and began the less than thrilling run towards the backstage area of Epcot. I hope that runDisney decides to add some more character spots and/or a DJ to this section of road. It was so boring. There was only one jumbo tron on this stretch and it really needed something else to liven it up. I didn’t even take any photos here cause there was nothing special to document.

After running about half of the 10K we made our way into the backstage area of Epcot and then out into World Showcase.

After a quick trip around the Boardwalk Resort area we headed back into Epcot and towards the finish line in the Epcot Parking Lot.

Here’s a little sneaky tip. If the line for a character is a tad bit too long and you don’t want to wait…stand on the opposite side of the character handler and wait for that split second that a runner is changing places with another runner and then BAM! Have your running bestie take that coveted photo. Sure, you may not be holding hands with Marie, but you still have that moment commemorated!

10K’s go by so fast! Bling acquired!

2014 inaugural enchanted 10k disney princess half marathon glass slipper challenge race medal

I love that runDisney has added the 10K to some of their race weekends. It really is a fantastic distance. Just far enough to challenge you, yet not so far as to scare off newbie runners like a half marathon might do.  This race had a super relaxed atmosphere and I hope it encourages new runners to join the runDisney community. Sign up for the 2015 runDisney Enchanted 10K and grab hold of some of that bling for yourself!

I paid for my entry into the runDisney Glass Slipper Challenge. My room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge was complementary. I was not required to write this post and all opinions are my own.

Inaugural 2014 Dopey Challenge Part 2 – 2014 Walt Disney World 10K Race Recap

rundisney 2014 walt disney world 10k minnie race amanda tinney

Day two of my four day Dopey Challenge started out a little rough. I was staying at Saratoga Springs Resort with friends in a one bedroom and had decided to try the pullout couch.  Mind you, I sleep at home on a cushy pillow topped mattress.

I had never slept on one of Disney’s pullout couches before and needless to say will never sleep on one again. I use the term “sleep” loosely. I think I got about two hours of shut eye that night and woke up with a massive migraine around 2:30 AM.

I took some Tylenol and tried to lay as still as possible, but there was zero relief.  I got up. And proceeded to get ready for my race around 3:30 AM when my girlfriend Leslie woke up. She too was running the 10K and I was meeting my daughter Alexus in the Epcot parking lot around 4:30AM.

Besides the headache and lack of sleep, the legs felt really good. I had taken it easy all day after the 5K. When we got to Epcot I found my kiddo and we filed into Corral E like we’d done the day before for the Disney Family Fun Run 5K.  Once again, in the last corral, I knew this was going to prove challenging trying to navigate around a lot of the walkers.

When the fireworks sounded Alexus and I took off and shuffled along behind the rest of the thousands of runners in front of us. The 10K was going to be a “grass race”, meaning we spent about 90% of it running in the grass. Probably not the smartest thing for someone to do who has a half marathon and a full marathon to run in the next two days because grass  is a dangerous place for runners to run. You never know when you’re going to encounter a pothole and twist your ankle.

rundisney 2014 walt disney world 10k minnie race mile 3

Luckily once we made it over the first overpass the road branched out into about five lanes which gave us a lot of room to navigate around other people.

Around mile four we started heading into the backstage area of Epcot. And then, like the 5K the day before, out into World Showcase. Check out the UP get up! This “Kevin” ran the entire race with this contraption on. Absolutely amazing.

We hooked a left out of World Showcase and started our trek around Disney’s Boardwalk. It was at this point that we ran into one of our friends Ashley and we ran with her for a small piece. We also ended up finding our friends Mark and Amy and ran with them the rest of the way.  Love these two…here’s their finish photo.

rundisney 2014 walt disney world 10k minnie race finishers

Once we’d made it to the front of Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, I caught up with my friend Jamie and we shuffled along with her for a little bit too. That’s the great thing about these runDisney races. So much fun and so many familiar faces. Not to mention the fact that 5K’s and 10K’s are ideally “fun runs” where people aren’t taking themselves too seriously.  How cute is she in this Minnie inspired race costume?

rundisney 2014 walt disney world 10k minnie race amanda tinney

We weren’t quite done yet.  We headed back onstage into Epcot, around Spaceship Earth and then through a small backstage area where we saw Genie and Lumiere.

rundisney 2014 walt disney world 10k minnie race backstage

And then voila! The finish line! So proud of my daughter Alexus. Minnie 10K in the bag! And a finish line pic with my girl Karen! I really need to get on the race costumes y’all!

rundisney 2014 walt disney world 10k minnie race amanda tinney

You know what time it is now? Kouzzina time! That’s right! Best breakfast on property and this would be day 2 in a row that I grabbed breakfast here. After the 5K, my friend Carrie and I grabbed breakfast there as well. Wanna know what the fuss is all about? Read this post: Review of Breakfast at Cat Cora’s Kouzzina Restaurant on the Disney Boardwalk

We ran into my pal Marc who had also completed the 10K.

rundisney 2014 walt disney world 10k minnie raceAfter our bellies were full we headed back to Saratoga Springs to meet up with another couple who had just drove down from Savannah, GA. My pal Marc would be running in the Walt Disney World Marathon on Sunday.  We all filmed a quick Travel with Rick runDisney episode before heading to Downtown Disney and grabbing an early dinner at Splitsville.

My pal Rick ever so graciously offered to head on home and let me share the King bed with my pal Leslie for the remainder of the weekend since I would be running the next two days. Thanks Rick!  We set the alarm and headed to bed around 8PM.

Leslie and I would both be running in the Walt Disney World Half Marathon the following day and we would need all the sleep we could get…
