runDisney Adds New Pink Coast to Coast Medal for 2014 Disney Princess and Tink Half Marathons

pink disney coast to coast medal princess tinker bell runDisneyThe Princess Half Marathon Weekend, scheduled for February 20-23, is one of two women-focused runDisney events. The other is the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend in January at Disneyland Resort in California. Both races are among the largest women-specific running events in the country and focus on healthy active lifestyles for women and girls. For instance, after nearly 7,500 runners ran in the inaugural Princess Half Marathon event in 2009, the popularity of the race has grown considerably with more than 26,000 registered runners for last year’s race.

New in 2014 is a special edition runDisney Coast-to-Coast Race Challenge Medal for runners participating in the 2014 Tinker Bell Half Marathon at Disneyland in January and the 2014 Princess Half Marathon five weeks later at Walt Disney World. Finishers receive the coveted medal featuring the likeness of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse with a pink overlay and lanyard.

Registration for the 2014 Princess Half Marathon opens June 11th. A limited number of runners will have the opportunity to register for both the Princess and Tinker Bell Half Marathon at that time. Those not securing an early registration for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon will have a second chance when on-line registration officially opens on July 9th.

Recap of My Favorite Disney Parks Blog Meet Up – The 2013 Tink Half Marathon Meet Up with Sean Astin

Amanda Tinney Sean Astin runDisney DisneyDo you have a favorite childhood movie?  You know…the one that you always pulled out when it was time to have a sleep over with all your friends.  The movie that you knew you had to share with your kids as soon as you had kids. I have three such movies but the one at the top of the list was “Goonies”. (Wizard of OZ and the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory are the others in case you were wondering)

In 2011 I was able to meet and talk with Sean Astin, one of the stars of “Goonies” at the Grand Californian Hotel. He was there for the D23 Expo making appearances as the voice of Playhouse Disney’s Special Agent Oso and I happened to catch him outside of the Storyteller Cafe and then got to ride the elevator with him and his daughter up to our rooms. What a super humble and nice guy! I was also a bit starstruck. It took every inch of restraint in my body not to turn to him as the elevator doors closed and say “Goonies Never Say Die!”

Fast forward to the 2013 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Meet Up. When I got up that morning I knew that I was going to get the chance to actually RUN with my Goonies childhood hero. Well…trail him a little. He’s a much faster runner than I am. I popped out of bed and made the walk from Disney’s Grand Californian Resort to the Disneyland Hotel through a very desolate and dark Downtown Disney.

Arrival at the Disneyland Hotel…it was COLD! See that golf cart? That’s the pace cart. I jest! But it kind of is…that cart carries media who take pics of the runners as we truck it through the parks.

As the sun came up we started our 2 and a half’ish mile trek from the Disneyland Hotel through Downtown Disney and then into both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.

25,000 2013 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend Spots Go POOF!

sold_out_mickyA little more than 26 hours after opening on-line sales to the general public, the Disneyland Half Marathon, Disneyland 10K and Dumbo Double Dare reached capacity and set a runDisney sell out record.  Coming off successful back-to-back capacity filled race weekends, in which more than  65,000 registered runners participated in the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and more than 19,500 in the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend at Disneyland Resort, runDisney races have reached a new threshold with record fast sell out times, joining the ranks of other sell out races Marine Corps Marathon, ING New York City Marathon and Boston Marathon.

Of the more than 25,000 runners who registered for the race weekend, 17,500 runners will participate in the Disneyland Half Marathon and 8,000 in the Disneyland 10K – including 5,000 in the Dumbo Double Dare.  The new 10K race, the latest in the popular runDisney series, will be a timed event and will take runners through Disneyland, Disney California Adventure and the streets of Anaheim.  Each finisher will receive a specially designed commemorative finisher medal. Runners looking for an extra challenge registered for the Dumbo Double Dare, which involves running the10K on Saturday and the Half Marathon on Sunday (19.3 miles total).  Participants who signed up for the Dumbo Double Dare will receive a Dumbo Double Dare tech shirt and a special finisher medal, in addition to the Disneyland Half Marathon and 10K finisher medals.

“Runner response to the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend is overwhelming,” says Disney Sports Marketing and Communication Director Faron Kelley.  “This points to the growing popularity of runDisney events and runner demand for two-day, back-to-back race challenges, along with the ever popular 10K distance.”

A very limited number of registrations are available for the half marathon and 10Kthrough charity and travel groups.  Runners can get more information on these opportunities by going to rundisney.com.

In addition, registration remains open for the Family Fun Run 5K and runDisney Kids Races. These races are filling quickly so runners are encouraged to register today
