You Know About Disney’s D23 but Are You Familiar with D24?

Disney D24 LogoThis will be old news to some, but to me this is a recent discovery.

D23 is the Official Disney Fan Club chartered in 2009.  The significance of the number 23 is a reference to the year 1923. 1923 was the year when Walt Disney arrived in Hollywood, California and founded the Walt Disney Company.

D24 is something entirely different.  Tokyo Disney Sea has a D24 original brand apparel clothing line. The reference to 24 is for the person who wants to be stylish 24 hours a day.

Here’s a Jack Skellington Bag from the line priced at ¥ 2,900

Maximal Art and John Wind’s Signature Disney Jewelry Collection

John Wind of Maximal Art with the Cheshire Cat

John Wind of Maximal Art with the Cheshire Cat

John Wind of Maximal Art tells his Disney Story…

In the late 90’s, we were approached by Natalie Nelson, the buyer for the Walt Disney Gallery Stores, about designing custom jewelry for this new retail division.

The stores were largely geared to adult collectors and fans, so we were encouraged to be dramatic (you don’t have to ask me twice!) and make ‘red-carpet’ statement pieces as well as simpler pieces.  Pins were a big category for us then, so there are a lot of pins, as well as cool bracelets and necklaces.

The collections we did included:

Vintage (b+w) Mickey, Mickey Mouse Club Era Mickey, Beauty and the Beast and 101 Dalmatians.

The work did great, but unfortunately the division eventually closed.  I’ve seen our pieces on eBay, and one “Target Mickey” collectors bracelet found its way to France and sold for $700! (original retail about $250…)

Time passed, and about 5 years ago I met Disney buyer Deanne Hill at the LA gift show.  I told Deanne about our history with Disney, and she offered us a new opportunity to design for the Disneyana Store at Disneyland.

We started slowly with a classic Mickey group (recreating some of our earlier designs and adding new ones).

Since then we’ve added Nightmare Before Christmas, Cinderella, Mickey Mouse Club Mickey and Alice in Wonderland.

And the pieces are now also available at New Century Jewelers on Main St. and the jewelry shop in New Orleans Square at Disneyland, plus the Vault in Downtown Disney, and coming soon, several locations at Walt Disney World!

For a designer whose work centers around imagery, the opportunity to go to the Disney archives and pick my favorite images of these iconic characters has been incredible!

Plus, becoming part of the rich history of the Walt Disney Company is a huge honor and a very gratifying collaboration.

John’s work has most recently been featured on the Official Disney Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons Facebook Page. You can check out and purchase his wearable art at MaximalArt.com.

Disney Launches Newest Plush Sensation Pook-A-Looz

Pook-A-Looz DisneyMore than 30 Popular Disney Characters Get a Sassy New Look with a New Line of Plush, Apparel and Accessories.

True to its tagline, “Too cute for their own good,” Pook-A-Looz – the new line of plush, apparel and accessories is remarkably unique and unquestionably cute.  Inspired by the urban vinyl toy culture, Pook-A-Looz were designed to capture the personalities of iconic Disney Characters in an edgy, offbeat way.  Sassy and fun, the new line of plush features more than 30 wide-ranging characters from Buzz Lightyear and Cheshire Cat to Muppets and Jack Skellington.  Pook-A-Looz are available now at Toys “R” Us, The Disney Store, DisneyStore.com, Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World stores.

Pook-A-Looz CheshireThe unique interpretations of these classic characters were inspired by the urban vinyl toy culture, which began in Asia a decade ago and features uniquely original and highly collectible designs.

“We focused on capturing one key element, gesture or trait of each character during the design process.  We wanted the look to be very unique, quirky and cool,” said Jose Zamora, lead designer.  “When you think of the Queen of Hearts, you think of her mouth, so we brought that out in the design.  With the Cheshire Cat, you think of the teeth.  So we focused on that famous grin.”

Ranging from $7.99 to $12.99 for plush and accessories, Pook-A-Looz have a strong collectible appeal. Disney Consumer Products gave Disney fans an exclusive sneak peek of the Pook-A-Looz collection at D23 Expo last September generating fan frenzy.  Fans will be welcomed into the world of Pook-A-Looz through a series of “Pook-a-Sode” videos on the Disney Living YouTube channel, beginning this week with Pook-A-Looz Mickey is the ‘Gentleman Caller’” and over the next several months. The Disney Living Facebook fan page and @disneyliving Twitter feed will also offer additional content and forums for fans to win prizes, share content and connect.

So what do you think of Disney’s newest merchandise concept Pook-A-Looz?

Christmas Merchandise Starting to Show Up at Walt Disney World

Jack Skellington Water Art

Jack Skellington Water Art at The Magic Kingdom

Hello friends.  Well…Halloween has come and gone.  The Magic Kingdom hosted it’s final 2009 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party on November 2nd and I had the pleasure of attending with a few good pals.  I am always sad to see the beginning of November because I know that the Halloween parties have come to an end and the finale of Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival is upon me…but alas…Christmas Time grows ever near!

My girlfriend wanted to head over to Frontierland and stop in at the Frontierland Trading Post to purchase an Event Exclusive Halloween Party Pin. I was shocked and amazed to discover that one side of the Trading Post was covered with Christmas Merchandise.  Here we were at the final Mickey’s Not-So-Scary HALLOWEEN Party, not even making it to Thanksgiving yet, and we were able to buy Christmas Merchandise.  There sure were some cute things…so cute that I had to take pics of everything so I could share it with all of you.  Presenting…your 1st look at Disney’s 2009 Christmas Merchandise….
