This morning Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts kicked off a Monstrous Summer by giving guests the chance to spend 24 magical hours inside three Disney theme parks.

From 6 a.m. May 24 to 6 a.m., May 25, 2013, on each coast, guests will experience unprecedented monster madness inside Magic Kingdom park at Walt Disney World Resort, as well as Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park at the Disneyland Resort – heading into Memorial Day Weekend, the traditional start of the family travel season.

The event features special entertainment, Monsters-themed merchandise and frightening food and boo-verages – one scary good time!

In Florida, the festivities at the Magic Kingdom started at 6 a.m. ET with characters Mike Wazowski and best pal James P. Sullivan (“Sulley”) from the upcoming Disney•Pixar comedy adventure Monsters University joining other beloved Disney characters to help open the park with a Monstrous momentMike and Sulley also took their turn as Grand Marshals of the Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade.

In California, Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park guests were treated to fireworks and live entertainment signaling the 6 a.m. PT opening.  Fans hit up the dance floor at Disneyland Park. Disney California Adventure weighed in with the freshly-built Monsters University “dorms” in Hollywoodland and a new Monsters University-themed float leading the Pixar Play Parade.

20 Things You Never Knew About New Fantasyland in Disney’s Magic Kingdom

  1. Disney Belle and Beast Prince Mural Be Our Guest RestaurantThere are over 12,000 “books” in the library at Enchanted Tales with Belle.
  2. There are 115 windows in the Beast’s Castle.
  3. Project size. Doubles the size of Fantasyland. Originally 10 acres; today’s Fantasyland with expansion: 21 acres.
  4. Team effort. Between Walt Disney Imagineers and Cast Members from Merchandise, Food and Beverage and various lines of business, it took more than 140 disciplines to bring New Fantasyland to life.
  5. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will feature five-car trains that are designed to sway independently as they swing around the track.
  6. The lion-like figures flanking the door at the entrance to Be Our Guest Restaurant were referred to as “golions” by the design team, a combination of goat and lion.
  7. Figures above the entrance doors, eagles with snake tails, are called “sneagles.”
  8. The six stone figures on the bridge leading to Be Our Guest Restaurant were all given the name “Frank” during the design phase simply as a way to identify them.
  9. Centerpiece chandelier at Be Our Guest Restaurant measures more than 12 feet tall and 11 feet wide. It boasts more than 84 candles and more than 100 jewels that hang down to give it added shine.
  10. At Be Our Guest Restaurant, the delicate Rose Gallery adorned with rose accents, paintings and tapestries, is centered by a music box nearly 7 feet tall with a twirling Belle and the Beast.
  11. Storybook Circus has set up in Carolwood Park – this name references the steam train that was in Walt Disney’s backyard.
  12. At the Magic Kingdom Park, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, and at the Disneyland Resort, Timothy Mouse carries a magic feather atop the Dumbo attraction. At Tokyo Disneyland, he holds a circus whip.

  15. Pete’s Silly Sideshow resembles a type of sideshow called a Ten-in-One, which traditionally offered a series of acts performing various tricks and daredevil stunts.
  16. Pete, sometimes known as Peg-Leg Pete, is the longest running continuous Disney character, debuting in 1925 in the Disney short, Alice Solves a Puzzle.
  17. There are 183 characters in Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid. More than 70 percent (128, to be exact) are featured in the “Under the Sea” scene.
  18. The Audio-Animatronics figure of the sea witch Ursula is 7 1/2-feet tall and 12 feet wide.

Disney Theme Parks to Stay Open 24 Hours Again Memorial Day Weekend 2013

Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort will kick off a Monstrous Summer by keeping three theme parks open for 24 hours nonstop on Memorial Day Weekend, the traditional start of the family travel season.

The Magic Kingdom Park in Florida and Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park in California will stay open from 6 a.m., May 24 to 6 a.m., May 25, 2013, local time* marking the beginning of a summer of fun inspired by the upcoming Disney•Pixar comedy adventure Monsters University.

Mike and Sulley will take a break from collegiate life and their Scare studies at Monsters University to host the All-Nighter, dropping in to scare up some school spirit. Guests will scream and giggle with delight at the lineup of thrills and entertainment that promises to make this a day and night to be remembered for a lifetime.

In Florida, the Magic Kingdom will feature a Monsters University theme where Mike and Sulley will be the Grand Marshals of the “Celebrate a Dream Come True” day parade – complete with pomp and circumstance – and make appearances in Tomorrowland. Guests also will find extra entertainment throughout the day and night, including characters in their pajamas in Town Square during the late night and early morning, and late-night dance parties in and around the courtyard of Cinderella Castle.

In California, guests can party the night away at both parks with special entertainment, including a Monsters University “TLT Monstrous” Dance Club and Star Wars characters in Tomorrowland, and late-night Character Pajama Party in Mickey’s Toontown at Disneyland. The new Fantasy Faire Royal Theatre at Disneyland will become a Royal Dance Hall late at night with a live band and dancing, and guests of Disney California Adventure will find Monstrous photo opportunities with new Monsters University “Dorms” in Hollywood Land and a new Monsters University float leading the Pixar Play Parade.

All three parks will feature limited-edition specialty merchandise and food and beverage offerings plus other surprises throughout the entire day.

runDisney Adds New Pink Coast to Coast Medal for 2014 Disney Princess and Tink Half Marathons

pink disney coast to coast medal princess tinker bell runDisneyThe Princess Half Marathon Weekend, scheduled for February 20-23, is one of two women-focused runDisney events. The other is the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend in January at Disneyland Resort in California. Both races are among the largest women-specific running events in the country and focus on healthy active lifestyles for women and girls. For instance, after nearly 7,500 runners ran in the inaugural Princess Half Marathon event in 2009, the popularity of the race has grown considerably with more than 26,000 registered runners for last year’s race.

New in 2014 is a special edition runDisney Coast-to-Coast Race Challenge Medal for runners participating in the 2014 Tinker Bell Half Marathon at Disneyland in January and the 2014 Princess Half Marathon five weeks later at Walt Disney World. Finishers receive the coveted medal featuring the likeness of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse with a pink overlay and lanyard.

Registration for the 2014 Princess Half Marathon opens June 11th. A limited number of runners will have the opportunity to register for both the Princess and Tinker Bell Half Marathon at that time. Those not securing an early registration for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon will have a second chance when on-line registration officially opens on July 9th.
