Disney to Wed Marvel – A Union Made in Animation Heaven?
Well…the Twittersphere and Blogosphere is all abuzz with the news of the marriage of Disney and Marvel. So what better topic today than the $4 billion dollar acquisition. If you’ve been a loyal reader of mine you can venture to guess that I am a Disney Evangelist and a Disney Purist. I own zero Marvel comic books and did not read any growing up. (Woah!… rotten tomatoes whizzing by my head, …easy there Marvel fans!) I did however slap down $10 of my hard-earned money to see Tobey Maguire play Spiderman and Robert Downy Jr. play Ironman at the movie theater. And it would be a safe bet to say that I will pay again to see future installments. Beyond that, I haven’t seen any of the other Marvel character based films of late. No Elektra, X-Men, or Fantastic Four will be found in my DVD collection.
I can hear the Marvel fans moaning down the hall at the thought of their beloved comic heroes bumping elbows with pirates and princesses, thinking that the pixie dust is going to rub off and ruin their bravado. Will their hard-core heroes become cowardly? From the conversations on Twitter it seems as though the Marvel Fanatics are pretty “salty” about the whole ordeal. Everyone else is just stunned or has no opinion worth putting pen to paper.
Many are commenting that Disney’s acquisition of Marvel means we will see “Wolverine II: The Musical” or a Caped Jonas Bro. Come on people…back to reality! This union will most likely be similar to the Pixar*Disney marriage in 2006 . Hey Marvel fans!….Why not be excited to have a behemouth on your side promoting your childhood heroes and bringing them back to a new generation of potential fans? This is a chance for you to grow your tribe! Can’t you see the value in putting all these Juggernauts together? What wonders never cease…
As a fan of entertainment and a good story, I and am open minded about what the future holds for this monumental event. If you’re not evolving, you’re dying, and this has now become a part of the Disney Evolution. I’d love to get your take on this. Post a comment below…
